Family

Some people think a family includes, a mother a father and kids like in the old TV shows. But thats not always the case. Some families include one parent. Some may have no children. Some may even have pets instead of children. I think a family is just a group that cares about eachother. They don't all have to live with eachother either. Its just a group that supports eachother and cares for eachother. Thats what a family is. No matter how big or small.

Analysis of Womens Role...

Women in Ancient Greece where looked as inferiors and they were lower then men. They had no opinion they where not aloud to have a voice and speak their mind. The following quote summarizes my point. "Your great glory is not to be inferior to what God has made you, and the greatest glory of a woman is to be least talked about by men, whether they are praising you or criticizing you.

Pause and Reflect questions...Think Throughs...

PAUSE AND REFLECTS:

1) pg: 266- My impression of Oedipus is that he is cowardly and not sure of himself because he said hes wept through the nights. If he wasn't such a coward and if he was a better leader and wouldn't be crying, he would be doing something about it.

2)pg: 269- The cause of the plague in Thebes was because the King was killed.

3)pg:272- In the reading it hard a part that said it was one long cortege. A cortege is like a funeral procession. I just pictured like one funeral procession after another because there were so much deaths it was like one after another.

4)pg: 275- The curse that Oedipus made was that, "Let no crop grow out of the earth for them -shrivel their women, kill their sons, burn them to nothing in this plague that hit us now, or even something worse." that was for people who disobeyed. Bur the first curse was, "Let that man drag out his life in agony, step by painful step-"

5)pg:281- The murderer of Laius was Oedipus the king. In the reading Tiresias said, " I say you are the murderer you hunt."

6)pg:291- The reasons why Oedipus turns against Creon is because he thinks he is lying to him and trying to kill him.

7)pg:299- Oedipus starts to panic and becomes fearful because he knows he is the man who killed him.

8)pg:303- That his "father" is dead.

9)pg:307- Because he was left on the hill with his feet pinned together and was found and given to Polybus.

10)pg: 313- That he was the son of Laius.

11)pg:322- He blinds himself from agony and pain and because he discovered the truth. He blinds himself with pins from his mothers/wife outfit.

THINK THROUGHS:

pg:283

1)Oedipus sent for Tiresias because he is the only one that knows the truth about who killed the king.
2)The chorus thought that he was a great leader.
3)Oedipus was so determined to find the murderer of Laius because he was scared that the same thing could happen to him.And to stop the plague that was killing his people.

pg:300

1)At the place were three roads meet Oedipus killed a man that was his father the king but he didn't know he was his father or the king.
2)Oedipus ran away from his home in Corinth because he was scared that the prophecy about him killing his father would come true so he left.
3)Jocasta thought that the prophet and the prophecies were lies.

pg:314

1)The shepherd gave the baby to Polybus.
2)They think that hes a bad leader for killing a generation and that hes a bad leader.
3)He accidentally made the prophecy come true because he didn't know he was adopted and he ran away from people he thought were his parents but weren't really his parents and killed his real dad and married his mom accidentally.
4)I predict that he will probably kill himself or runaway.

Mendela and Pericles

1) They both honor who they are and where their from. Biko was killed by being beaten to death for his cause and fighting against racial segregation. The soilders where killed for war and for fighting for their country.

2)To remeber the death of Biko was important because it helps to remeber the struggle and to remeber what happend. Nelson wanted a more humane society for his people and for them to get along.

Poems by Sappho

1) I think out of all poems I best understand " He Is More Than a Hero." because its about someone special that makes her nervous when he's around. She talks about how she can't speak, and she gets a tingling feeling and her heart races, which are feelings you get when your around a special person. I think its easy to understand because I have felt that way before.

3)In Sapphos poem, "Some say througing cavalry..." is about a friend of the writers whos moving away because of a war or because shes in danger but she misses her. In the second poem, "He Is More Than a Hero" it talks about a relationship and the girl gets nervous everytime th boy comes around and talks to her. Lastly in the final poem called, "To Aphrodite of the Flowers, at Knossos" is about a holy temple and how its so graceful and beautiful and smells good with frankincense.

4) I think the second sentence (She values intimiate moments of friendship) is true because in the first poem shes sad that her friends going to a diffrent island. Also the last sentence (she appreciates the beauty of nature) because the last poem talks about the temple and how beautiful it is with its apple trees and frankinsence.

6)I would Mary J. Blige because she has a very strong R&B soulful voice which I love and some of the poems are meant to be strong and meaningful.

Writing Option 2.

The year of seventh grade I had a teacher named Mr.McLelen but we called him Mr.Mac. He taught science, everyday in his class he would have a power point on his TV. In his class we would have a journal and we would complete our assignments in the journal. But he would go really fast and we would have to write really fast in the beginning of the year but as the year went on we got used to it which helped because it taught me how to write fast. He was extemely funny, loud, and crazy. Just like Dorona he was crazybecause he risked his life hoping that one of his students would think fast and save him.

Mr.Mac was a great teacher because he played around but we did get a lot of stuff done...a lot. In his class was the first time I disected a frog. He was very nice and made sure we didn't get sick disecting them. Also we planted plants in his class. Lastly he had lots of pets in his class. I think he had a snake and a huge fish tank full of colorful fish. All in all due to his creativity and craziness I learned a lot and loved his class he truly did make science fun.

A typical day at school.....

My name is Karina Marquez and I am from Sarasota, FLA typical school day for me starts off when I go to the bus stop at 6:20 a.m. The bus picks me up about 10 minutes later and then I am on my way to school. To any normal outsider Booker High isn't a school that would be a on the A list due to its looks. The neighborhood you go through to get to Booker is not the prettiest neighborhood, its pretty ghetto actually. Its a one floor school. Its mostly outside and open its not completely closed school. Theres about 37 buildings not including the portables.

Booker (unlike some highschools in the area) has block schedualing so we only have 4 classes a day but each class is 85 minutes. In most cases you have two core classes and two electives. If you have VPA (visual and preforming arts) those will be your electives.

Most of the students eat lunch at school. They have normal school lunch everyday along with Pizzahut Pizza. On certain days they have cookies. Theres no soda at my school. Only juice and flavored water and of course regular water.

Booker High approxamently contains 1760 students that attendend. There are a varity of students unlike most schools in Sarasota County, Booker is the most diverse. We have a lot of African-Americans, Latinos, and Caucasions. But minority contains most of the Booker population.

Think Through pg 126

1)My reaction to Arjuna was he was the smartest one to comprehend what the teacher, Drona, was trying to get her students to do without being specific.

3)Aruja had many traits but he was extremely skilled in using weapons. I think they admired him for that because he could defend himself and hunt.

4)I think Drona was a good teacher because he wasn't obvious he didn't tell you things straight up. He made you think a little. I think his teaching methods where interesting, he kinda liked to trick the students like with the alligator stunt, he was testing them to see who would react correctly.

5)I think Indian parents still say this story to their children how things aren't really as apparent as they seem and to focus and sometimes things are more obvious then you may think and that you shouldn't over think. Because all the students over thought they all answered the question just as Durona was asking it. But he was just trying to trick them. If the task was to aim and shoot at the bird and concentrate on the bird why would you care or see the people around you.

6)Drona reminds me of Mr.Meyagi from karate kid because he gave him tasks that didn't seem important at first but really helped the karate kid later in his fighting.

7)I think the lesson in the story was that not to think too much about the right answer and sometimes things are obvious but we tend to over think. Yes, I believe this moral is true because I myself tend to over think and then i notice that it was really more simple then i made it out to be.

Ancient Literature and People

Comparisons of the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, and Ancient Hebrews:

First of all they all had some kind of social status and religion.

Upper Class- The Mesopotamian upper class included members of the ruling family, high-ranking government officials, priest, powerful merchants, and large landowners. The Egyptians also had those same people in their upper class but they also had doctors in their upper class. The Hebrews upper class included tribal patriarchs, judges, important military leaders, also priests and prophets.

Middle Class- Mesopotamian middle class were the merchants and farmers, artisans who were skilled in crafts, and lastly scribes. In Egypt their middle class were merchants, craftspeople, artisans, and other skilled workers, but they could move up in status by marriage. Lastly the Hebrew middle class included, landowners and warriors, but the merchants and artisans came as the population and cities grew.

Lower Class- The lowest social class in Mesopotamia were slaves. They preformed the lowest tasks. Some of these slaves where people captured by war some where locals sold into slavery by their parents. In Egypt, the middle class where farm laborers and people who worked on building projects. Bur slaves could own land and marry and eventually buy their own freedom. In the Hebrew society most people where farmers and herders or worked for people and where paid for their help. But they did use conquered peoples for help too.

The Women- The women of Mesopotamia had a lot of rights and opportunities. They could farm, do crafts, be merchants, and become priests. In Egypt upper and middle class women had almost all the same rights as men. Many owned land, had businesses and proposed marriage. But the Hebrew women had less rights. It was mostly dominated by men. They mostly had privileges only in there homes. But of course occasionally one woman stands up and proved the men wrong such as a female judge named Deborah.

Religion- The Mesopotamians where polytheistic and had different Gods and Goddesses for each city-state. The Egyptians where also polytheistic and had a big obsession with the afterlife. Lastly the Hebrews believed in following the Ten Commandments and the Bible.

Greek Culture

1) The religion of ancient Greeks is diffrent then from Jews, Christians, and Muslims because they hand no holy book and no commandments.

2)The Olympian gods are like humans because they experience love, jealousy, and hate. However unlike humans they live forever.

3)Some features of the Athenian democracy are, one-fifth of the population could participate in the government. Also any citizen could be a part of the assmebly and they could submit a law that could be debated in the assembly. Lastly poor citizens could hold office.

4)The three greatest thinkers of ancient Greece where Socrates, Plato, Aristotle.

5)Some events in the Olympic games included, boxing, wrestling, and diffrent kinds of racing to name few.

6) The Greek language was so easy to learn because they used letters to represent all the sounds of the Greek language.

Latinos

My name is Karina I am 15 and I am from Sarasota, FL and I am Cuban_American

Latinos are a very big ethnic group in the United States. There are more Latinos then African Americans in the United States and it didn't seem to hit the US until a while ago when we had our freedom rallys how much latinos there are in the US and how much work we do in the US. Most latinos are hard working. I know many hardworking Cubans in Miami that open new busniesses and do crudy jobs just to put food on the table. We care deeply about our families (there are exceptions) and we are very family oriented people. And we do whatever it takes to take care of them even if that means working over time.

A lot of Americans don't like latinos and sterotype us. They think we are all bad. I am sorry but theres good and bad in EVERY race and ethnic group. No race or ethnic group is perfect. They say we are all gangbangers but thats not true. A lot of the gangs were started because we needed unity because other races where discriminating against us. Then people rebeled and made new rival gangs and thats how gang rivals happend. But they had good intentions.

They don't think about our position and all that we went through to get to America before they deport us back. Once we get here it does not get easier right away. The struggles we go through are not easy learning english, getting jobs, going to school. A lot of people don't like to hire latinos because of the reputation the media gives us. But there are a lot of people that do hire us cause they know we are hard workers and they know we are striving to start over and make a better life.

Latinos for the most part are very happy, energetic, bright, colorful, people that have a lot of culture to give to the society. I believe that we are great people. And I am proud to be latina.

Egyptian Literature

2) The tone was kind of worried of what the after life would be like. If everything was going to be prepared correctly. The situation is very important to the Egyptians because that's what determines there life after they die.
3) The speaker thinks Ra should praised for making the sun rise and fall, because to Egyptians the day is happy and joyful but the night is sad and depressing. So they praise the sun god for making it day and doing good things like bringing life.
4)I think the speaker is in delight because shes getting married I assume, and she is waiting and dreaming of how it can go and what can happen that's why she wants to stand next to him and be with him till he dies.
6) I think the last text, "Whenever I leave you, I go out of breath" give the strongest sense of the speaker. In this text it talks about his personal feelings about this girl that makes him feel that way. Because at one point everyone feels like this. But other people don't praise the son god or dream about getting married. Yes people do dream of getting married but this is more person oriented.
7)The poems differ because one is more about marriage and the other one is more about feelings and how she feels when shes around this person.
8)The Egyptian society and our society compare because both of us appreciate everyday life like being with family and people we love. But our society does not obsess about dying. When the time comes it comes but to Egyptians its a big deal because to them they need there belongings for their next life.

Think Through Gilgamesh

1)I thought it was interesting cause everything he worked for like vanished cause he lost the prikly vine that was sopose to make your youth come back. But he learned from his journey and he engraved it on stone for other people to learn also. 3) Gilgamsh can't accept the fact people die because one its a hard thing to get over especially since it was someone very close to him. Also i think hes affraid of death because he saw the way his friend died and hes scared the same thing will happen to him and he wants to aviod that.

4)He wanted to show him all he has done all he has accomplished being the king of Urk. (this is a guess) Also that he was showing him that it wasnt flooded like they would have expected after the big flood.

5)The event that had the strongest affect on Gilgamesh was obviously the death of his friend Enkidu cause he would have never gone on this journey if he didnt feel reponsible for his friends death.

6)I think he would be a wiser king unlike in the begging when he got ahead of himself. He might also apprecite life more because he knows how short it can be.

7)In our world today we know there is no way to aviod death and we know its coming. And we know theres no way around it unlike Gilgamesh who wanted a cure.

Teen Parents

Teen parents is becoming more and more common. More and more teens are having sex early and not using protection. I think that you should always use protection cause you never know if the girl is going to get pregnent.

Its a big reponsibility to take care a child no matter how old you are if you are 15 or 30. You have to feed the child change his or hers dippers, pay for daycare if you are going to work, somtimes you have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to pay rent and keep food on the table and then also go to school. Theres so many expenses that most people dont think about before they have sex. Also if your a boy and you decide to leave the girl theres the matter of child support, but there are some cases when the boy stays with the child and the girl has to pay but thats not that common cause the girl usally has the right cause shes the mother but there are exceptions.
Child support will haunt you to the day the child turns 18 and thats if you pay every month if not in most states you have to keep paying until you pay for everything. In some states failure to pay results in suspension of drivers lisence and eventually jail.

I think you should think about the fact if you are going to be able to work well together as the parents of a child. Are you going to be commited to being part of this childs life. Many parents may leave the other parent with the child and run away and never know the child and then your a single parent stuck with a kid. I think even though you might not get a long with the other parent its very important to try to get along for the well being of the child.

Theres nothing wrong with teen pregenancy its really common mabe its not the best road to take in life but it does happen and you have to embrace it in a positive way in my opinion thats a personal desicion even though it might have been an accident you should always take care of the child. But always remeber its a big reponsibilty and condoms are not 100% safe, so think about it before you take that chance.
